Challenge:
I was asked by a friend to design characters and illustrate for her passion project: a rhyming story about a boy whose lost blue sock leads him to discover a world of friendly creatures living in the nooks and crannies of his bedroom.
I was asked by a friend to design characters and illustrate for her passion project: a rhyming story about a boy whose lost blue sock leads him to discover a world of friendly creatures living in the nooks and crannies of his bedroom.
Solution:
I drew all of the characters by hand, added color and texture in Photoshop, and sketched storyboards for the entire book. Alex McGee’s look is equal parts Calvin and Conan O’Brien. For the design of the creatures, I drew inspiration from Lane Smith, Maurice Sendak, Jim Henson, and Dr. Seuss.

The book never made it to publication, but the playful art style, bright color palette, and silly dialogue make this project one of my personal favorites, even in its unfinished state.
